as a noob I can't make head or tail of the instructions please can someone help?

There's a chicken 'n egg problem. This is not a particularly useful project. You have to be very knowledgeable of Linux and with particular use cases, like a geolocation app, in mind to get much from it. So, putting up clear instructions is sort of a disservice, because if you don't already have plans for learning about embedded linux systems, this is really a waste of time. You might as well get a Pinephone and have a useful device that runs linux 🌞. If I motivate someone to poverty me wrong, all the better.
