Does anyone know how to show number of available pacman & AUR updates?

I suppose one can use pacman -Qu | wc -l but I think it's useless without pacman -Sy and that one requires sudo

IIRC you should use checkupdates in pkg pacman-contrib. I don't know the answer to foreign updates because I'm not on Arch right now, but I used to be able to get that with pacaur (discontinued). I assume any other decent AUR helper may help you with that.
