Reduce lines of mergesort.c by 50% while keeping readability

I tried to make it readable. With the current tree it ended up in 13th position among 38 implementations.

@abircb Thanks. By the way, I've done a version with 18 lines (see #76) that was well rejected by @geohot for its poorly readability. However, it would be nice to see other smaller versions written in C. Speaking of which, no entry mentions "mergesort" in IOCCC.
