As far as I know it is the only way... EKS uses their own plugin to run over the underlying VPC and therefore this is what both the control plane...
so have you opened the ports on the nodes? I dont think 443 is enabled by default depending on the kubernetes distro.

I should have mentioned I was having issues prior to this so installed the molecule_ec2-0.4.dev1 version.
subsequently I have tried on version 0.3 - I still had issues with 'tagged_instance' and the same issue with molecule header.
