The Christmas ticket: miscellaneous nice-to-have feedback from Ticino
During the last month I animated a couple of map.geo.admin.ch workshops in Ticino. The pubic were either teachers or would-be teachers. I post here some feedback / suggestions open for discussion
- give the possibility to export the map to image too and not only to .pdf
- give the "measure" tool the same coloring possibilities as the "line" tool
- make it possible to draw an open line and edit it as polygon. In other words, dragging the last point of the line over the first should create a full-fledged polygon (with area colored too) which is not the case today
- there is a strong need of a catalog. The api one is not complete and really technical and the INSPIRE one in www.geo.admin.ch is not well known. Maybe this last catalog should be linked from map.geo.admin.ch too?
- graying out the swissimage background possibility when 3D is active is extremely confusing. Even more so since when you can add the swissimage layer to obtain the same result
- Actually, importing a KML is just visualizing it and you do not have any way to interact with it. It would be nice to have an option to really save an external KML in our draw infra and giving the user the full control over it. Maybe just limit it to map.geo.admin.ch-created KML?
- would be nice
- trivial to do
- More complicated that it sounds. Needs more investigations
- What do you mean? we have inspire
- +1
- Agree, should be doable at least for map.geo.admin.ch-created KML
-
legally not possible ( licence allows only PDF --everything else is data export) second. with PNG /TIFF you get easily a distortion in ration when inserting in a document
-
then measure becomes draw (curretnly it is set up like google my maps... and we should stick to it)
-
Cost not only of dev but also later on operation and backward compatbility. goes byond redlining --it is already GIS
-
Catalog: we have single thematic maps on landing page www.geo.admin.ch bottom. moreover: the permalink allows for each target group to set up their won links...BTW this would be a nice project for schoolmaps.ch the official catalogue is eCH. in the future we will also have ech in www.geo.admin.ch
-
TOPO knows about this issue: is key for launch of v1 3d
-
no import of third data INTO the fsdi ( this isds , schuban -- cost will explode: IAM, ensure no copyright infringed data is imported, no warez is hidden as kml, no injection code is imported...) this is GIS --can be solved with PPP: and solution is : schweizmobil.ch 30.- a year.....
Everything clear, but a single issue With 4) I mean that the user has no easy way to explore our 650+ datasets. Either he searches for something (but he has already a direction to shoot at) or he dives in the tree structure of the catalog... which leads to confusion and alt-F4-ing the whole damned thing. The catalog is not meant for exploration. Yes, we have dataset of the day but what I really mean here is: what should the user do in order to answer to his question "What data is available on map.geo.admin.ch?". A good answer is, as stated in the original post, this catalog. Problem is: the page is known by 1% of mapgeo users. How could we make it more prominent and useful?
We will relaunch the start site of www.geoadmin.ch so there the catalogue will be more prominent. In general : if the user wants to access a catalogue he will do this rather in a portal and not a map viewer. A list of all datasets: here is where geocat comes in.
here is where geocat comes in
...are you serious?
if the user wants to access a catalogue he will do this rather in a portal and not a map viewer.
Wrong, because "the user" does not even know that the portal exists. portal --> viewer links are legion and prominent viewer (which is the main entry point) --> portal links are non-existant (no, I do not count the tiny link at the bottom right as a valuable linking tool). Question is: how do we link efficiently the viewer to the catalog present in the portal?
main entry point has to be geo.admin.ch . viewer is viewer. for "finding" data : m2m - CSW (THE LAW) for H2M: www.geo.admin.ch
what about adding a link to https://www.geo.admin.ch/en/geo-information-switzerland/geodata-index-inspire.html in https://help.geo.admin.ch .... as a first step
ist already there https://help.geo.admin.ch/?id=32&lang=de
dont forget: help.geo.admin.ch is the help for the map viewer-- and we should not make a helpf or the cms but fix the cms
-> create a story for the new cms
