Add some readers for Linux and Windows in the list

Open stof opened this issue 5 years ago • 7 comments

Currently, the listed apps include apps for Android, iOS and macOS, as well as web-based apps. But there is no desktop app for Windows or Linux listed. This looks like a shortcoming.

Note that I'm using Thunderbird myself on these 2 OS, but there might be better options to list there in term of UX. Thunderbird is primarily an email client, so the feed features are quite hidden during onboarding.

That's a good point. I don't know those platforms myself, but I'd like to have coverage.

  • For Windows... unsure? You're right, it would be good to have a dedicated newsreader as this will be friendlier for new users
  • Linux: FeedReader appears to be both popular, multi distro, and decently designed.

To give a chance for others to chip in with suggestions, I'll leave this issue open and not make any changes to the site yet.

Not used it personally, but Fluent Reader (Win/Mac) looks Reeder-ish, recently updated, open source, in app stores (new user friendly? 🤔), and free: https://hyliu.me/fluent-reader/ (source: https://github.com/yang991178/fluent-reader)

Standalone only, doesn't support sync services yet (fundraising for them but doesn't look very far along), but not a bad starting point?

Feedbin is an excellent web client and can sync with native apps like Reeder and Netnewswire (for example, web works with all OSes of course).

@inevernu Unlike the others currently suggested, Feedbin is paid rather than usable for free – I suspect that's why it's not one of the top-level recommendations? (Feedbin fan here, though!)

Ok, good point. Didn't realize Feedly has a free option so I was wondering why it was there and not Feedbin, they are often mentioned in the same places..

Ironically, I'm also a happy Feedbin user! I wanted to have three, and it's a pretty arbitrary list... I went through various "top RSS readers" lists, grepped my own logs, and tried to pick popular + free + approachable ones.

Next step is to start a page on the wiki and start collecting newsreader names and screenshots. I'll start on that when I have a chance
