APRSdroid with Kenwood TH-d72A via USB cable?

Open HouseShadow opened this issue 5 years ago • 7 comments

Is anyone able to use APRSdroid with the Kenwood TH-d72A HT when connected by USB cable? I am unable to get this setup working.

I have tested the following and am still unable to make this work.

  1. Reviewed the Kenwood Wiki (https://github.com/ge0rg/aprsdroid/wiki/Kenwood-D7x0) and one of the GitHub issues regarding the TH-d72, https://github.com/ge0rg/aprsdroid/issues/12.
  2. Tested various settings on the HT, both APRS and PACKET TNC modes
  3. The current APRSdroi settings are:
  • Preferences->Connection Preferences->Connection Protocol->TNC (KISS)
  • Preferences->Connection Preferences->TNC init string-> KISS ON (tried with & without) RESTART
  • Preferences->Connection Preferences->Connection Type-> USB Serial
  • Preferences->Connection Preferences->Baud Rate-> 9600
  1. Tested 2 versions of APRSdroid: (a) the current Google Play version 1.5.0 and (b) via direct download APRSdroid-gl-2019-03-16.apk
  2. Tested various settings on the HT, both APRS and PACKET TNC modes.
  3. The Android version is 8.1.0 with patch level Feb 21, 2019 and Kernel 3.18.71... running on a Moto G5 Plus.

I believe this is an issue with APRSdroid or its configuration as I am able to connect to packet stations with this phone+HT using another app. In order to make a packet connection, put HT in PACKET TNC mode, connect the HT to Android via a USB cable, then use the Serial USB Terminal app (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.kai_morich.serial_usb_terminal&hl=en_US) to place the TNC into KISS mode and connect to a packet station.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

I too tried and failed at this, but I didn't try the Serial USB Term app, I'm glad to know about it and will try that next. I just figured my old Android version didn't have the USB serial driver it needed for the TH-D72.

I don't have a D72 of my own, and the initial testing happened together with a friend.

I've updated the USB serial driver between 1.4.0 and 1.5.0, and the initial support for the D72 was tested using the 1.4.0 release: https://github.com/ge0rg/aprsdroid/issues/12#issuecomment-249368465

Could you please downgrade to 1.4.0 and test again?

Will do! I'll report back here with my results when I get a chance to play with it again...

I'll check it out this weekend as well.

After downgrading APRSdroid to 1.4.0, I was able to transmit APRS positions and messages from APRSdroid by connecting my Android Phone to the TH-D72 via a OTG adapter and USB cable.

-The TH-D72 was in Packet TNC mode and attached screen capture shows APRSdroid settings. -Did not do any testing with HT in APRS TNC mode.

So, sadly, it turns out my old Galaxy Player just doesn't appear to support USB-OTG, so until I get bluetooth hacked into my D72 or get a newer Android device, I'm out of luck. Oh, well.

Is using 1.4 the only solution? I am experiencing the same problems with APRSDroid 1.6.2a. Which driver is 1.6.2a using?
