Mapsforge V4 and V5
Open Android Maps is dropping support for V3 mapsforge.
https://www.openandromaps.org/en/last-update-for-the-old-v3-maps
Can APRSdroid offline OSM be revised to use the V4 or V5 mapsforge? To conserve memory on my device I share maps between several applications, such as Lotus and OruxMaps. Since those are navigation apps the maps need periodic updates that won't be compatible with APRSdroid starting in 2020. Not needing to store multiple versions of maps would be handy.
Thank you for all the hard work @ge0rg!
thanks very much for bringing this to my attention. I was under the impression that mapsforge isn't developed at all any more.
I'm currently evaluating my mapping options for the next APRSdroid release (Google broke the old Google Maps V1 API in Android 10, so I need to revamp that anyway).
So far I've found:
- maps.me: they have a super-fast map renderer that can compete with Google Maps, but it seems you can't just integrate it into your own app :(
- OsmAnd: this looks promising as well, and seems to be able to do online and offline rendering, but is rather slow
- mapsforge v4/v5: I need to re-evaluate that! :)
I am wondering why you think OsmAnd is slow. I use their app a lot for navigation (road, hiking etc.) and it runs well even on older hardware. Never found it to be slow. Rendering is definitely much more fluid than the current mapsforge V3 renderer. Thanks for your work.
@ge0rg Love the app. I hope that the Offline Maps feature can become part of the regular build. I'm still on APRSdroid-gl-2018-11-18_osm since I can't get the MapForge maps to display in v1.6.0d.
I downloaded the current version and it appears selecting an local OSM maps is now in the standard build. At the top there's an option to select between two Google online (Map or Satellite) but the option OpenStreetMap.org points to your stored offline maps.
Still would be nice if the libraries were updated to use v4 or v5 Mapsforge so that more updated maps could be used. I downloaded a current map from OpenAndroidMaps and it would still not display. But just having the regular app support offline maps is very handy and it'll be easier to support Georg by buying it from the Play Store.
I've been completely unable to get any offline maps working with the current 1.6.0 version. It's great to see (1) the feature included in the mainstream play store version and (2) that you can choose a map file to use (rather than needing to be aprsdroid.map in a specific place).
Is there an up-to-date howto with known working .map files?
It's a great app, I've been a user for years, but offline maps has always been a struggle (sometimes successfully, sometimes not).
Any possibility to use the offline mapping feature? I've tried to use the map from v5 mapforge repo (all v3 files are gone).
Error message I get:
unsupported file version: 5
This is the new URL for V3 maps: https://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/misc/openstreetmap/openandromaps/mapsV3/
But they're outdated (2019).
V5 is the most updated version.
I use offline maps, because in my country, data coverage is very poor or null.
Among other apps that i use, they work with V5 without problems.
I hope APRSDroid could work with V5 in the future.

@LU7HQW Luckily the website referenced on aprsdroid website (https://extract.bbbike.org/) is able to prepare a nice and up-to-date v3 map from area of your choice. Just choose the format: Android > Mapforge OSM.
Thanks! I could find in pre-extracted areas, my country map updated in V3! 73!
