Delete "Pixel FIFO"

Open nummacway opened this issue 1 month ago • 4 comments

The last two days, we had two people on Discord who got confused over "Pixel FIFO", since the information of that page contradicts the "Rendering" page, doesn't make sense and is mostly wrong.

In the current state, it will not help anyone.

I therefore propose deleting it until it can be filled with correct information.

#379 aims to fix this, there's still a long way.

It does contain some useful info nonetheless, which is why I believe we've been reluctant to outright delete it thus far. If #379 could be driven to completion, then this issue would be solved without debate.

Seems like an extreme course of action to take.

  • Deleting the whole thing is obviously not a constructive change.
  • You say it's "mostly wrong", which parts specifically are wrong?
    • Why not target the parts that are wrong?
  • Simply adding a message (or messages) to inform readers might be a more reasonable suggestion. This could be applied to the whole thing, or, ideally, the specific parts with issues. Such a message could include e.g.:
    • this section contains errors
    • the accuracy of this section is disputed
    • rewrite is in progress (link)
    • want to contribute? (link)

As I said: The page in its current state doesn't help anyone. The last two days have proven that it even confuses people more than it can help.

If I went to Wikipedia and uploaded an article on some topic that is relevant, but with half of the information made-up, it would be deleted. Would you shout "That's not constructive!" to the administrators?

You say it's "mostly wrong", which parts specifically are wrong?

Compare the current live version and the latest state in #379. I'm not sure if they still want to fix the second half (Mode 3 Operations), or if that's become redundant and is about to be deleted. I think the Sprites section in that part is very confusing, and generally the penalties, since pretty much all numbers contradict other parts of Pan Docs which I think were confirmed to be correct based on observable test ROMs.

Simply adding a message (or messages) to inform readers might be a more reasonable suggestion

Adding a message that reads "Some information may be wrong, but we don't know which exactly. Please find out yourself which information it is." doesn't help anyone. It would even be more useful to push the current draft in #379.

I agree pushing #379 forward is best course of action here, I'm not sure how much more it'll take to merge that one. We could narrow the scope of the PR till it's more attackable in a reasonable time frame.

@nummacway, if you want, in the meantime, to delete Pixel FIFO we should try to understand which are the incorrect parts , or if there are any that are worth leaving. Which one are the infromations that are "made up" and confusing? could you open a PR starting removing lines?

We can also remove the page link from the navigation and have it "unreachable" for now.
