Dreading timing bug during splitting of genes

Splitting of genes has a timing bug! It seems to work most of the time, but sometimes that window stays open. Why? We're not pulling any threading shennanigans. I'll leave it about for a bit, otherwise I'll get replace that bit of the code with something else.
