Toolshed: are tiles the best for categories?
- Finding a category in this alphabetically ordered list is more difficult than in a list view
- It is a lot of empty space on the screen (but its 2x scrolling in the old and the new version)
- A tabular view would more easily make users see the "big" categories.
Maybe I just need to get used to the new view. But the old three column (name, description, number of tools) display seems better to me.
I mean it is an easy change but the cards seem the direction Galaxy is moving? Anybody in @galaxyproject/wg-uiux want to comment on the card vs list discussion as it applies here:
- (cards) https://testtoolshed.g2.bx.psu.edu/repositories_by_category
- (list) https://toolshed.g2.bx.psu.edu/
A random thought I just had is that it is possible that the cards look better during development when there are fewer entries and when data is filled in the lists turn out to be more usable. It does feel like there is some developer preference toward cards and user preference towards lists that would be explained by this phenomenon.
I do much prefer plain lists fwiw but @galaxyproject/wg-uiux your input is asked here
my 2c -- clean, readable lists are significantly more usable than cards in most cases
compact lists
Compact card lists 😝
Now seriourly, a simple list makes more sense here.
No one is going to let me have the emoji right? I should just PR this without that 😆.
