Translation-UI improvements
Some small and big ideas. Maybe we can do some of them. (order is random)
- [ ] 1. Adding option to display a third language to enable people to translate who are not speaking the source language (and having further evidence and inspiration for the ones speaking more than two languages, and the ones in between)
- [x] 2. Add option to sort strings according to key (to have the belonging ones together)
- [x] 3. Add option to sort strings "untranslated at top/bottom" (so that you don't have to search them. We have 250+)
- [ ] 4. In Overwiew: Hitting enter in language-filed will trigger the "go"-button :)
- [ ] 5. When using the arrows (and at start), the shown excerpt of table should go where selection is. instead of "only" moving each ctrl-up/down one step in the direction of selected line.
- [ ] 6. Not counting the removed strings in statistic/bar (demotivating if someone translates all and it shows 81%)
- [ ] 7. Saving user (that translated string) ? (for credits and repair/prevent vandalism)
- [ ] 8. Showing (sortable) last edited row per lang ?
- [ ] 9. And a crazy and big one: Add translation-overlay for website so that you have an icon next to all mf_strings (or you can right-click on them) in order to translate them there within the website. -> no more tables :)
I think these are all good ideas, and all desired and doable. v0 is feature frozen though and I can't start working on any of this until v2 achieves feature parity with v0, and there is no ETA for that at the moment. Work is happening but not able to commit to any ETA.
Only caveat is with translating from the non-native lang, I'm not opposed to adding an option to make this possible, but from experience, it significantly lowers translation quality. I can't think of any specific examples now but the meaning can get morphed like this.
I just hit the issue of finding untranslated strings. The feature to get untranslated strings ordered on top/bottom would solve it. Or even get only those listed.
One more thing to add here as UI improvement. Would be good to see more then 2 languages side by side. Best would be to be able to compare all languages on one view.
(For point 1 and 9) Check out the interface of Mozilla’s new Tool Pontoon. I think it's a really inspiring example for us and "CT3" (community, crowdsourced, and collaborative translation) in general.
