How to secure communication between agent and GLPI?

I've noticed fusioninventory-agent has --user and --password parameters. I thought they were used to protect anyone from sending inventories to the server but they do not seem to do anything significant when used. What ways are typically used to protect a GLPI web server from attacks? I'm currently using tag filters but I would prefer a more thorough protection. Thank you for your help.
