system-wise unique identifier for each trace

Currently the pid (modulo 2^16-1) is used for the trace_identifier which is highly likely to be unique on a host. For multi-trace a unique trace_identifier is needed per trace and currently this is set as pid + i which could potentially clash with other processes. Unclear how to fix this.
