Running the bookmarklet on this page and selecting the sentence "Organisers claim that one million children attended the most recent event at the Phra Dhammakaya temple near Bangkok." produces a tweet that has a space at the end of the quote and so exceeds 140 characters.
A quick check shows that all the other statements on that page come out with an extra space after the period as well, although not the statements with no trailing period.
