Release version 4.0

With all the code changes and new features recently we should plan to release version 4.0. This should act as an umbrella issue for the 4.0 release.

This would resolve #62, #68

@frostney Could you start the process as the other collaborators don't have access to npm for this package. Thanks!

Instead of creating a final release version, how about beta-releases? This would make it possible to have faster feedback.

The npm version is now incredibly stale and quite broken. What is the probability of there being a new release in the near future?
