Instructions in BUILD are unclear for newbs
I'm just starting to become familiar with Common Lisp, but I'm not past the newbie stage yet. From my perspective, it is non-obvious how to get started playing with Mezzano.
As a newb, my current mental model is such that the following are confusing:
- Why doesn't the README tell me how to play with this? It has a bottom part about enabling persistence but that's as close as it comes. It took me a while to notice the BUILD file.
- The BUILD file talks about SBCL and quicklisp. I have those already, but only from earlier today. 2 hours ago I would not have known how to get ql:load to work. (Could use some lmgtfy links on setting up SBCL and QuickLisp).
I'm about to clone the repo and start playing so I'll soon have answers to the following things, but BEFORE I do that my confusion is currently:
- So do I need to clone the Mezzano repo or is (e.g.) "lispos-file" already a package in a repo that ql can find?
- If not, should I be doing this from a repl launched in the Mezzano directory? Do I need to --load something first?
- It looks like something called "ipl.lisp" will be created, and it will be such that I might have opinions about what's in there. Where will this be put? Is it going to pollute the Mezzano source dir? Let me check... ah, there's already an ipl.lisp there. I initially thought the BUILD process was going to create one.
- Once I have a raw disk image called mezzano.image, what do I do with it? I'll try running it in Virtual Box. Do I need any special settings?
As you can see I'm being intentionally dumb, but I do so in hopes that this newb's perspective is useful. :)
And here are the things I learned while playing:
- Clone the repo inside ~/quicklisp/local-projects
- Make and cd to a directory in which you want the image created. I did ~/temp
- Open an sbcl REPL inside and follow the instructions in BUILD
- Get stuck because building on OS X is not supported :) *
- lfp.h file not found while trying to compile iolib
More progress:
- Fix the iolib problem by cloning and installing libfixposix
- Just kidding about step 2 in my comment above. Do all this inside the Mezzano repo or the cross compile setup won't work)
- Followed updated README steps mentioned in PR #3 until you get to the image selection part
- Create a vdi image from the built raw image with
$ VBoxManage convertfromraw mezzano.image mezzano.vdi --format vdi
- Start the VM. So far the image doesn't boot. I'll try to see if I can fix that.

512MB with the pre-built image works OK, but crashes when built from source.
I introduced a major bug in the cross compiler while removing the dependency on sb-cltl2. You'll have to remove all the generated .llf files and rebuild. You shouldn't need more than 512MB after that.
Better build instructions are coming soon, thanks for experimenting!
That works. I can now boot to the initial REPL in the SYS.INT package. I probably need to tweak my ipl.lisp file farther to get back to the desktop. Thanks for the help!
I follow the instruction to build the mezzano.vmdk, I build it successfully but now I am unable to start it on Virtual Box. It stuck on boot

Configure VirtualBox's serial port 1/COM1 to write to a file, the serial log will be in the file you specify. See the VirtualBox manual: https://www.virtualbox.org/manual/ch03.html#serialports
