Disappearing Back Button in Navigation Panel

Strange behavior I haven't been able to figure out.

In the navigation panel, there is a UL containing two LI. Each LI has a UL within it to create the tiered navigation structure. This works as intended just fine.

When I open the app and tap on one of the top-level LI, its "sub-menu" slides into view with a back-button that returns me to the main list. When I tap on one of the top-level LI again, either the same LI or a different LI, that LIs "sub-menu" appears BUT there is no back button!

Any ideas on what I have going on that could be causing this?
