would be cool if you could replace sprites with icon font (e.g awesome icon font), which should also solve retina/non-retina issues and allow coloring icons according to a jqm color scheme

awesome font does look nice, but I think it will be hard to implement, because for bartender you need to cut out icons from the background (black & gray). There is no cross-browser "masking" effect which you could use to change from default to higlight on the icon only. So to workaround, I cut out the icon from the background and switch default/active behind the cutout... (so much for an easy explanation...)

You could have a look at my tabview widget (tabview), which is a collapsible-set with data-type=horizontal. You can style the tabs as you like (themes, icons), so this is probably more in the direction you are looking for.
