Spook 0.4.1 breaks my home assistant with very slow responses

Open fuzzysb opened this issue 2 months ago • 11 comments

What version of Spook are you using?

0.4.1

What version of Home Assistant are you using?

2025.9.4

The problem

Ha slows to a crawl. And could not figure out why. I updated spook to 0.4.1 to along with some hacs frontend stuff and also music assistant to latest... Had the issue and in the end restored from backup and then perf was back and working fine. So then I was going to do the updates one at a time and restart and the first one I did was updated from 0.4.0 to 0.4.1 of spook and rebooted to the same issues of HA going to a crawl. Logs state lots of actions take over 10s. I have removed spook and now everything is working again fine... But I cannot pinpoint the issue

Anything in the logs? Paste it here!

I just came here to report the same thing in 4.0.1

I came to report the same, I ran the profiler on my home assistant and spook showed up on the top time consumption

• /config/custom_components/spook/util.py Functions like async_extract_entities_from_template_string, extract_template_strings_from_config, and a lot of regex compilation (re._compile) show up very high.

Spook appears to be re-scanning / re-parsing templates repeatedly, which is very CPU-heavy.

Disabling spook was enough to get home assistant working ok again

I've received some profiles (Thanks Marcel!) that explains a lot; will address as soon as I am able to spent time on this one.

something new?

I have to admit that I am not brave enough to re-activate spook at the moment. I have been using spook for years, but now I can't risk to paralyze my HA.

Any update on this one? I love to be able to use spook again.

Thank you.

Any update on this one? I love to be able to use spook again.

Thank you.

It looks like integration is dead
