Good question. I guess I didn't have a use for them when I initially created the package (was dealing with very transient data). I wouldn't push out a major version...

I'm proposing separating the casting and serialization steps. That way you can cast or validate any value into any format, and only after this will the appropriate serializer be selected...

For now, I think the workaround seems simple enough. Could be something to keep in mind if others feel like this would be a useful feature.
