Update FormTools 2.2.6 not possible

When clicking update button from FormTools 2.2.6 I'm redirected to a page stating:

Upgrade
This page cannot be called directly. You must click the "Update" link in your Form Tools installation.
Form Tools Upgrade Script 2.0.1

Tried manually downloading the same 2.2.6 build + extensions to overwrite, but does not solve the problem. Any ideas what to try in order to update to latest version?
