Add an Explorer Replacement mode
Directory Opus has an Explorer Replacement mode. When it is active, then in any situation in which Explorer would normally open, DO opens. The goal of this issue is to implement the same feature in fman. It was requested by a licensed user.
As with any replacement file explorer I've tried (aside from DO), I am unable to fully make the switch because this feature is always missing. There are two ways to replace the default explorer under W10:
- Registry option. Applications are supposed to respect this registry option, but they almost never do.
- Redirect invocations of the explorer executable to fman. I believe this is what Directory Opus does and works pretty much everywhere.
A replacement file explorer I have tried using time and time again is XYplorer. Despite the INCREDIBLE feature-set and awesome customization potential it has, I have never dropped any money on it simply because I cannot reliably use it. Indeed they have gone with option #1 and it rarely works. Whenever the default file explorer opens up, shows up in the middle of my train of thought and I have to think "Ah shit I need to copy the folder path, close the explorer, then open the path in XYPlorer...". It's like a huge cockroach appearing right in front of me and I have to deal with it.
As a result the only file explorer replacement I've ever truly enjoyed in W10 is QTTabBar which is simply a huge enhancement to the default file explorer, instead of a whole new software.
I have followed Fman's development for a while, and right about now I have tried it again recently and it works tremendously well. It used to be super laggy for me, seemed like a lot of operations happened synchronously and the app froze whenever opening folders and whatnot... Right now it seems like the perfect app for me, I love its minimal UI and very cool design philosophy, however it has this same adoption roadblock I've always faced. If option #2 could be implemented in Fman such that I can use it all the time without any interruption or having to manually open Fman to use it, it would be a huge incentive for me to buy it. Because only then I will feel like I am using the app in a serious manner rather than just "toying" with it.
Thank you for the feedback. I understand this is important to you but I must also admit that I won't have time to get to this any time soon. I'm sorry. Maybe you can change some settings on your own system to get the behavior you want.
@mherrmann Could you be persuaded to work on this soon in exchange for feature sponsorship? Happy to invest in this.
Thank you for chiming in @saluker. That depends on the price of course. Are you willing to spend a couple thousand Euros?
Are you moving FMAN to Incremental Funding Methodology?

Hi, no, I just replied to the offer above.
I would be also interested in this feature (I am a licensed user as well), although I understand it would take a lot of time. For the time being, I was trying to solve this by myself (option 1 above with registry option) and followed this example and it actually works quite well so far although it's definitely not a perfect solution.
