Rebrand?

Open bertob opened this issue 2 years ago • 16 comments

As discussed in #114, the current app name doesn't quite follow the naming guidelines, so I'm starting this as a place to brainstorm potential new names.

Here are some fairly random ones related to sketching/note taking to make a start:

  • Binder
  • Ballpoint
  • Scrapbook
  • Marginalia
  • Pigments

rnote could potentially be a short name for any number of actual long-form names, like:

Roughnote Renote

Related #30 where generic names were dismissed -_-

I actually like the name Rnote. It's simple and it sticks. It also directly states that this is a note taking application

Scrapbook sounds good and it fits idea of the app

I mean, I guess that's true but it doesn't follow the HIG, and I honestly enjoy the name "Scrapbook as well!"

Why doesn't rnote follow the HIG guildelines? I just don't see which guideline it breaks.

It breaks this guideline

Another names (maybe awful ones):

  • Ink
  • Canvas
  • Collage
  • Doodle
  • Impasto
  • Bullet journal

But I really like the name "Scrapbook"

I just read that, then what's the problem? It doesn't break any of those guidelines. rnote sounds like a good name.

Likewise, a good name should avoid:

  • Using trademarks or names of other projects (for example: GNOME Instant Video).

  • Having a “G” prefix (for example: GMusic).

  • Overly complicated names and/or acronyms.

  • Puns and inside jokes.

  • Non-standard punctuation or whitespace (for example: SuperWriter).

  • Made-up words or word combinations.

Well, it's not a trademark. It doesn't have a G prefix, it's not overly complicated, it's not an inside joke as far as I know. It doesn't have non standard punctuation or white-space, and it's just the letter r and note together. I don't see where the problem lies.

Kreijstal avatar Jul 24 '22 13:07 Kreijstal

It's both of these, FWIW:

  • Made-up words or word combinations (letter + word)
  • Non-standard punctuation or whitespace (two things with no whitespace in between)

Just want to signal that I am open for a name change at some point, and I think we already have some good suggestions here. I just haven't made up my mind yet, and changing the name will be a bit painful and we'll lose the built-up name recognition so I am taking my time with it to make sure I'll be happy with it. :)

How about rNotes (Are Notes)? Anyway, thanks for the great app. Good replacement for onenote. Wish you could also include the voice note, or even video notes (record direct from cam and mic).
