Add layers to document
Is your feature request related to a problem? Please describe.
Managing, re-arranging and deleting parts of notes is difficult when dealing with very complex / dense notes.
Describe the solution you'd like
It would be helpful to add layers to the notes and be able to select an "active layer" to draw on. This would allow making notes that do not effect other parts of the document and therefore make managing notes in the same document easier.
Describe alternatives you've considered
I usually use the polygon select tool to select the specific parts of the note I'd like to manage.
Additional context
For example: I use rnote to make note sheets for exams at my university. The layer tool would make it much easier to manage lots of information in a confined space.
I'm imagining this would work similarly to layers in image editing applications (photoshop, gimp, etc)
HI @KCGD, I would also love to see the feature you mentioned, I will try to see if I can tackle it.
I use Rnote for some time and I noticed it's really a competitive tool for anything related with image quick editing, annotating documents and doodling. Basically a Linux replacement for MS Paint. Honestly, I didn't expect so much from a note app.
But same as OP I see one disadvantage related with layers feature. Apart from the drawing, it's handy to be able to annotate and mark some scribbles on some document and then have the ability to easily erase or transform them on a separate layer.
I'd like to suggest a similar solution to the one introduced in MS Paint (overview), where the Layers panel is hidden by default to not clutter the UI since not everybody needs layers right ahead and after enabling the panel, it's extremely simple with only layer previews available.
I believe that the similar approach would work within Rnote, even if it would be bare-bones without any extra options other than add layer, hide layer and reorder.
Desperately waiting for the layers feature. Not a rust dev myself (yet), otherwise I'd give it a try.
