Ability to not allow sleep when not in full screen

It would be great to allow a way for the phone to not sleep in cases where the video is not in full screen mode. I have tried this by manually executing wakelock but this seems to cause a crashing bug at some times when the video goes into or out of full screen, presumably because Chewie also uses wakelock. Is there a good way to prevent sleep when video is not in full screen? Not everyone wants to watch videos in full screen.
