Map MacBook hardware models to common names
Gong snippet: TODO
Problem
When a MacBook is enrolled in Fleet, the Hardware model attribute in the host page only displays the Model Identifier (example: "Mac16,7" for a 2024 16" MacBook Pro). It would be more useful if we added a field to include the MacBook model as displayed in the Apple documentation.
What have you tried?
I can manually check what the Model Identifier means on the Apple website.
Potential solutions
Fleet could use the publicly available Apple documentation and map a new field ("Model Name") to their corresponding models.
What is the expected workflow as a result of your proposal?
I go to a macOS host record, and at a glance I can see more details about the hardware in the About section.
I think we should update this feature request to something along the lines of "Additional host vital for Apple devices: Model Name". This likely needs to be an additional field rather than replacing the existing data. The current Hardware model data is also helpful for a number of different use cases.
Perhaps these fields should map to and use Apple's language. Ex:
Model Identifier: Mac16,6
Model Name: MacBook Pro (14-inch, 2024)
@allenhouchins I'm 100% behind this - I think enriching the data we serve is better than replacing one field for another. I've updated the issue.
