Windows 11 24H2 makes Details thumbnails small - After Windows update thumbnails appear to be so small

Open iSams123 opened this issue 8 months ago • 4 comments

Hello, its me again with some weird bug. I checked some of my archives (.zip/.rar) recently and the preview thumbnails on the right appear to be smaller than they used to. Whereas cbz thumbnails still display just fine. I suspect Windows update messed up sth. Just want to know if you got the same issue.

Best regards

I'll take a look. Did you update DarkThumbs?

Yes, the one from Oct 2024 is the latest I assume. As mentioned, i usually do archiving and there was no issue until recently.

OK, yup, I'm seeing this. Windows 11-24H2 and DarkThumbs 2.0. I'll need to dig further to determine if DarkThumbs is doing something different for (e.g.) CBR vs RAR files.

To re-state for my own clarification:

  • View a folder containing Rar, Zip, Cbr and Cbz files. They should be clones (i.e. copy zip, rename to cbz; etc)
  • View icons with DarkThumbs enabled
  • Enable Details view on the right side.
  • Compare the icon in the Details View for selected CBR vs RAR file; CBZ vs ZIP file

Screenshots using darkthumbs/issue78:

  1. CBR selected, shown in details: Image
  2. RAR selected, shown in details: Image

Same behavior for CBZ vs ZIP. Note how the icon in Details is larger for the CBR file vs the matching RAR file.

Running DebugView with DarkThumbs, having cleaned all thumbnails, and viewing the files in List (not icon) mode:

  • DarkThumbs is invoked by File Explorer to show the icon in the Details view when clicking on the RAR file.
  • DarkThumbs is invoked by File Explorer to show the icon in the Details view when clicking on the CBR file.

Confirmed that DarkThumbs is invoked to produce the icon for Details view.

Questions:

  • Is DarkThumbs returning a different icon for CBZ vs ZIP, CBR vs RAR?
  • If DarkThumbs creates different icons for CBZ vs ZIP, why do they look the same in File Explorer icon view?
  • What about 7Z vs ZIP? See darkthumbs/issue90 : no apparent difference between ZIP/7Z, but as soon as issue90.rar was copied to create issue90.cbr, the details icon is different!
  • Is there any configuration for Details view?

Notes:

  • No apparent difference for other pairings, e.g. EPUB vs ASW3 [places where files have probably been converted]

Update: 2025-04 Cumulative Update for Windows 11 24H2 was applied, the behavior still occurs.

Idea: Implement GGB support (issue #99) and see what happens when copying ZIP to GGB. My gut tells me this is Window behavior, as the shown Details icon matches the size of the "archive" icon shown when DarkThumbs is disabled for Zip/Rar/7z files.

I have confirmed two things:

  1. The image provided by DarkThumbs is the same size whether from the (e.g.) CBR or RAR file.
  2. Windows 11 23H2 does not show this behavior!

So this is a Microsoft Windows issue, not something DarkThumbs can do anything about. Introduced with Windows 11 24H2.

I have used Microsoft's Feedback Hub app to report the issue. I suggest that you do the same, and for "additional info", maybe provide a link to here [ https://github.com/fire-eggs/DarkThumbs/issues/103 ]
