Meeting notices

  • FINOS Project leads are responsible for observing the FINOS guidelines for running project meetings. Project maintainers can find additional resources in the FINOS Maintainers Cheatsheet.

  • All participants in FINOS project meetings are subject to the LF Antitrust Policy, the FINOS Community Code of Conduct and all other FINOS policies.

  • FINOS meetings involve participation by industry competitors, and it is the intention of FINOS and the Linux Foundation to conduct all of its activities in accordance with applicable antitrust and competition laws. It is therefore extremely important that attendees adhere to meeting agendas, and be aware of, and not participate in, any activities that are prohibited under applicable US state, federal or foreign antitrust and competition laws. Please contact [email protected] with any questions.

  • FINOS project meetings may be recorded for use solely by the FINOS team for administration purposes. In very limited instances, and with explicit approval, recordings may be made more widely available.

Agenda

  • (5 min) Convene, roll call, welcome new people.
  • [ ] Display FINOS Antitrust Policy summary slide
  • [ ] Review Meeting Notices (see above)
  • (5 min) Approve previous meeting minutes.
    • Approved by acclamation.
  • (5 min) Current thinking among a few FINOS folks is that PyKX license isn't what mainstream open source organizations would call "dual licensed".
    • PyKX team refactoring into open and proprietary.
  • (15 min) Examples of generating revenue off permissive open source?
    • Might be worth having Olivier Poupeney (Field CTO, FINOS) talk with KX about where he's seen it work.
      • Thoughtworks supports "Backstage" from Spotify.
      • Orkes supports "Conductor" from Netflix.
    • Agentic AI framework vendors like crewAI / Letta offer the underlying plumbing as open source and charge for the GUI / Enterprise features.
      • KX has traditionally charged for the plumbing.
      • Hard to add extra layers to kdb+ without defeating its USP of high throughput and low latency.
    • Freemium version of kdb+ should be out in a couple of months.
    • Legacy kdb+ developers also did not embrace containerization.
      • Many RDBs used maximum available RAM on the host.
    • Hard for KX to offer a full-fledged offering in the Data Science Platform space.
      • Embedding q.so in some other platform required translation to other formats like Parquet which also defeated the USP.
      • KX might also look into which FINOS projects could be leveraged to achieve lower development cost easier integration.
        • For example, Temporal recently joined as a FINOS member.
  • (15 min) AOB, Q&A, Adjourn.
    • GitHub Copilot using http://code.kx.com as reference?
    • Can ask right in the browser.
    • Can check out https://github.com/KXSystems/docs into sandbox and use @workspace.
    • How GitHub Copilot RAG works.
      • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MqBBEgpYh0Y
    • Kdb Studio bug for million character syms
      • But only want to truncate for display purposes.
      • Preserve the original value in the data model.
    • Some PRs need reviewing in finos/kdb but Alvin's EasyCLA needs re-approving (possibly due to "entitlements cleanse" after switching departments).
