Can't bind ESC key as hotkey in Preferences screen

I would like to use ESC as my hotkey instead of the default Control+Option+Cmd combination.

I've swapped my Caps Lock key with ESC so essentially I'll be pressing Caps Lock + some key, which at least for me would be far more comfortable and faster, because I'll be staying on the home row instead of my left hand hovering down and back to the default three key combination.

Having said all of that, when I try to remap any of the hotkey combinations, the moment I press ESC, the focus seems to go away from the field that I'm trying to change. This essentially blocks me from using ESC in a hotkey combination.
