Icons in toolbar not rendered correctly

The icons in the toolbar are not rendered correctly. See attached screenshot. I only get black squares. I am running Fiji (or ImageJ which shows the same behavior) on Arch Linux. I've reinstalled and removed the IJ_prefs file but now change.

This is with the latest Fiji based on ij1.54f and the bundled java 1.8.0_322 (64bit)

Any ideas? Any additional information I can provide to help solving this?
