Backport features from 0.4 to redmine 1.0.x

Redmine 1.0.x is still largely deployed as "stable version" in many systems. In others the 1.1.x series is not yet avaliable (Ubuntu, ...) or is still in early testing (Debian (only experimental),...).

This issue's aim is to request porting of features present in 0.4 or HEAD to be compatible with redmine 1.0.x.

Feature #9 requires some changes available in Redmine 1.1.0, thus it can't be backported. The other changes could be, but I don't have the time to do this. Sorry.

I'll left the request open if anyone is interested in it.

When I was referring to porting I meant only those features that 'can' be ported without major efforts.
