How to implement things like trees.

Hey, I'd like to know how to implement trees. I got some trees working by making a function using noa.setBlock which created a trunk and leaf mass, however it was crazy bugged, and the trees only generated after the player walked into an area, so the tree generation was actually separate from chunk loading. I'd like to know how you went about this in noa.
