Description
Many mice have side buttons, but macOS does not do anything with them. Out of the box, these buttons do nothing, which feels like a waste.
I just want a setting in the Mouse preference pane that lets me map M4 and M5 to a back-swipe or forward-swipe gesture.
There are apps that enable these buttons and shuttle events to the active application (usually forward or back navigation), but installing a separate piece of software solely to enable behavior for some of the most popular mice is backwards. Logitech offers their own app for mapping mouse buttons (closed source, likely doing privacy shenanigans). There are open source apps like LinearMouse (https://github.com/linearmouse/linearmouse) but, again, it still involves installing a piece of software, granting it accessibility permissions, configuration, adding a login agent, and keeping it up to date.
