Description

• In System Settings.app > Notifications > Messages, turn off “Play sound for notification”.
• Notification banners for incoming text messages will arrive silently in the background when other apps are active.
• If Messages.app is the active app, incoming messages will still play notification sounds.

I turned off notification sounds because I find the noises irritating. If I turn off notification sounds in System Settings, that should affect behavior no matter which app is focused.
