I think most of this has been resolved, even though there are still plenty of casts and type checks that are necessary.
Turns out we already had this field in the test data, and updating snapshots was all that is needed: https://github.com/fb55/domutils/commit/26e1cbb7a69650833735df70099cf66564f25ce5 Thanks @TimBroddin!
The search element is now part of the HTML spec, so let's get this merged!
