This will probably become more feasible after the Lit rewrite if I ever finish that because everything then extends HTMLElement internally but either before or until such time this PR...
This is not possible because the React code is fully autogenerated by Stencil (unlike the referenced package) so we cannot add custom code, especially not without jumping through major hoops...
