The current styling doesn't seem good, and it seems that it's the default one

We had a stab at this once, but it never came to anything.

There is something in adminlte we could use here..

Even though jazzyness is the initial motivation, using components from adminlte or bootstrap tends to save us a lot of time on compatibility/responsiveness.
