Cannot set resolution higher than Full HD

SecondScreen always shows this message if I try to change the resolution to something above 1920 x 1080. Even my phone's built-in display supports a higher resolution than 1080p.

Why can I not set a higher resolution for my external display? What's the purpose of these option if it's impossible to use them?

I noticed that you can enable Expert mode in the settings which allows you to change the resolution to any value. In that case you have to input the number of pixels for width and height manually and the list with resolution presets is not shown. So it doesn't answer the question, what's the purpose of the presets above 1080p if they are not shown in expert mode and it's impossible to use them in standard mode?
