Tomba! Special Edition
The game itself is located in ./assets/data/ There is a "t_data_e.car" (PAL) and "t_data_u.car" (NTSC) file. Both of these are actually just .bin files. Renaming them to be .bin files made them playable in Duckstation.
Some bonus information:
- Every single .pak file found in the game can easily be opened & extracted with 7-Zip.
- They seem to be using some version of PCSX ReARMed to emulate the game.
- Replacing the .car file with a different .bin file (any game) will work ONLY if you dummy out the "t_start_u.stt" file found in ./assets/game/ as this file seems to have some sort of protection in it that won't allow other games to boot otherwise.
Does it contain BIOS files as well?
I don't have the game myself, but PCSX Rearmed doesn't seem to require a PS1 BIOS because it's listed as optional. None of the files listed on SteamDB look like they're a BIOS so I guess there isn't one in this game. But you can extract a PS1 BIOS from a PS3 update using a fanmade tool.

The ROM seems almost completely identical to the original. The only difference I noticed was that the button prompts were changed to Xbox icons. Aside from that, the ROM is functionally identical to the point of RetroAchievements detecting it as the original.
So, no, there is no remastered music or FMVs in the ROM, but that is a good thing since that means it works perfectly with emulators and (presumably) on real hardware.
Special Edition got updated to now feature a Japanese version. Strangely, it appears to be the Japanese language hacked on top of the US version. This is arguably a good thing since the Japanese version is considered somewhat unfinished. Now we can play it with a Japanese language with the updates from the overseas release!

I’m working on a Russian and Ukrainian localization (руссификатор и украинизатор) for Tomba! and I could use some help.
I found that the .stt files contain the game’s localization data — probably all the text/dialogues. I want to open and edit these .stt files to translate the game properly.
If I replace the main game image file (like the .car file) with a Russian version, the game still shows English text on PC, but in any emulator, the text is Russian. That makes me think the .stt files are controlling the in-game text language.
My questions:
How can I open and edit .stt files?
Are there any specialized tools or recommended approaches for these files?
Is anyone already working on localization for Tomba! or has tips on how to handle this?
