Should compositing gamut map colors before proceeding?

This thought occurred to me recently. Usually, when I am using compose(), I'm operating in the gamut that I should be. I had not considered before now that maybe it should require gamut mapping before applying compositing. This sounds like something we need to answer before proceeding.
