cannot initialize working copy: creation time is not available for the filesystem

I am seeing the error message abort: cannot initialize working copy: creation time is not available for the filesystem when I try to run sl clone or sl init --git. I am using Ubuntu 20.04 on Windows Subsystem for Linux.
