F-Droid: No updates due to proprietary libraries

Open SecUpwN opened this issue 10 years ago • 4 comments

Hey @f2prateek, I really enjoy your app, but what's up with you making heavy use of proprietary libraries? F-Droid actually stopped updating your app (which is really bad), as stated on your application page:

This app will no longer be updated; Upstream started using proprietary libraries heavily.

If you did not know about this before, you should now consider fixing this a PRIORITY to not lose users!

I think the only proprietary library is Crashlytics, and I can't remove that since it's pretty much the only free crash reporting tool for the volume of this app. I guess I could use Firebase, but that's also closed source.

@SecUpwN I realised bugsnag has a free plan for open source, so I should be able to remove any closes source libraries.

You could just provide a version for F-Droid without it until you found something better, like many other apps do.

There isn't a big difference anyway if you don't get Crashlogs from some users, because they dont use Play Store and therefir don't use your app at all or because they don't use Play Store and therefor they use the Crashlytics-free version of your app.

I could. Just don't have the time ¯_(ツ)_/¯
