Some thoughts on function: Try to open unloadable urls in separate Tab/Window

Open Industry opened this issue 4 years ago • 3 comments

The feature is well intentioned and I think has potential to adds back the functionality that stopped working after Google Images changed their page a while back. However, it works on all websites and oftentimes loads images in new tabs/windows when that isn't the intention. For example, in WhatsApp, all users' profile pictures open in new tabs. This creates more headaches than it solves with the ability to load Google Images. Is there an elegant solution e.g. use a whitelist for that feature?

Hi Google Images does not need this feature to be enabled to work quite well. But if you enable it then you'll be able to zoom a few more images (basically the ones served in http). That's why this feature is disabled by default and should be enabled only when you experience a lot of image loading errors (red spinner).

@GrosPoulet I think @Industry's point is that this function should be a per-site configuration rather than a global setting.

OK, but it means a user whould have to add to a whitelist every website where he/she encounters images loading errors in order to enable the feature. Too much burden IMO. These errors probably occur more often in images search websites, because they collect images from many sources. So maybe this feature could be enabled only for such websites (list hardcoded in HZ+) ?
