Clean up extraneous files in 2.x dir

As discussed in #751, there are a bunch of unneeded files and dirs in thje 2x dir that are not used. They don't do any harm, but removing them would at least reduce the size of the repo and make it a bit tidier.

Not an urgent task--just a reminder.
