Glad to hear the project is still alive
A few days ago I checked whether this project was abandonware, and was surprised today to find from a commit, it’s still in development — apparently something big is coming.
EXO started out of a desire to run research experiments on large language models using the hardware we already owned.
What began here is becoming part of something much larger.

I had planned to use my stack of old hardware for a homelab, but at one point I thought the project hadn’t been updated for ages and felt discouraged, especially after consulting my AI advisors. Still, I wish it were active so we could repurpose older machines into clusters for AI models. AI agents working nonstop will likely be the next big thing, yet not everyone can afford a decent GPU. At least my old laptops and devices will keep my place warm during this Canadian winter instead of the dumb resistors!
I’m not sure the project makes sense long-term, but I’ll give it a try. Who knows — maybe I’ll achieve the local AI workflow I want with what I have until I can afford new hardware. As things scale, more options should appear: more fabs are productive and more are being built. In a year, many datacenters may replace equipment and flood the market with used hardware — hopefully.
Where?
Where?

Interesting, let's hope so!!

Hey @neoOpus - While it would be cool if they continued the work they started, nobody is forcing them to do anything. They could say "The project is done, what do you want from me? Fork it!" and everything would be okay. While i agree that this project looks like abandonware, 1 commit updating the readme isnt "active" again, i have my doubts. I was looking for a less mean word then vaporware, maybe futureware and abandonware is fitting currently. I really hope they continue the work, really like the idea of reusing hardware.

@jammsen I'm largely in agreement with your sentiments, yet I remain optimistic that the initial promise will be upheld. I also hope that more initiatives like this emerge, aiming to divert thousands of tons of computers from landfills, a pressing concern given the recent tech landscape shifts. Such endeavors would not only make AI more accessible by leveraging local inference but also provide an additional benefit during winter, as computers could double as smart heaters, converting consumed energy into both heat and computation. If I'm able to afford a decent machine, possibly with the help of donations due to the currently unaffordable prices even on what is typically a discount day like today, Black Friday, I plan to explore using AI to enhance or even spawn a new project. I see significant potential in this approach to mitigate the vast resources spent on data centers, which risks monopolizing AI in the hands of large corporations.
Alive, where ? most issues are no more replied or anything. I think this is dead, unfortunately.
