BTW, there is a related issue for pacman: [FS#23407 - Allow soft failures on Server URLs](https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/23407) Perhaps investigating there makes sense.

Not quite sure this is the best and/or correct way to fix this. What exactly was the motivation for this error message?
