I'm not an XMind user but why not giving it a try if our users also find it useful? Feel free to fork the repo and propose your implementation for that. I really appreciate that.

I don't want to be negative, but I am not so sure the additional load (implementation, maintainability, UI complexity) required for this functionality would be a good idea.

I believe that Pencil should stay focused on UI/UX sketching and mockups - not try to be a jack of all trades, at least for now.

Again I do not want to shoot down your idea, just add an opinion.

Edit: unless the mind-mapping functionality could somehow be split into an optional plugin or derivative release.

mind mapping is not a thing of ui mockups, so I go with @larvanitis that this should not be considered a feature of this software.

Draw.io now have all features , much better than Pencil now. Pencil could had took it place if developers kept up.
