I'm always frustrated when I'm using EtherPad on a mobile phone browser. By default, the ToC is visible and takes the left half of the entire interface without providing any benefit as long as headings are not used. The pad settings for "Show Table of Contents" are not persisted.

https://etherpad.org/doc/v1.8.18/#index_embed-parameters isn't listing any option here.

Describe the solution you'd like With an additional parameter "?showTableOfContents=false" any user may define his/her preference to not show the ToC at all.

I personally would vote for setting this to "false" by default.

Describe alternatives you've considered CryptPad but this doesn't work mostly.

Additional context

Plugin? Might this feature be better suited to being a plugin? I don't think so in this case.
