How can I set the background color for the specified text？

Very apprecicate to know this open project. Recently I get the requirement feature to set the specified text with background color, I got the specified text and the original text, but I haven't find any APIs that match this feature. What should I do to complete this feature with etherpad? Any suggestion will be apprecicated, thanks in advance!
